St Paddy's Day 5K Run
|
|

|
|
If you
are looking for some good Irish fun then be sure the join several dive
club members for our annual romp down Greenville Avenue. This year's St. Paddy's 5K race/walk
will be held on Saturday, 3/15.
The race starts at 8:30am (registration opens at 7:00am) and
once again we will gather in the Sigel's parking lot before and after
the race.
Not a
runner? There are plenty of
activities for everyone including the exciting St. Paddy's Parade,
socializing, and just a day where things get a little green and wacky
in Dallas! The parade usually begins around
11:00am but you will want to be there no later than 10:00am to secure a
good viewing spot. Parking is a premium
so you may want to catch the DART Red Line to Lover's Lane and then
it's just a short walk north to Sigel's.
This is
a bring your own everything event --beverages,
snacks, sunscreen, chairs and so on. So, pack your stuff, dress
in you "greenest" items, and join us for a fun-filled day of
running and relaxing.
If you have any questions or
need additional information see the official web site: http://www.dashdowngreenville.com/ or contact Larry Dickinson at ldickinson@ti.com or 972-951-7800.

President's Dive Log by Lary
Harrington

If you missed the February
meeting of the Club, you missed a very good presentation on
Decompression Sickness. What I
took away from the presentation is that the causes of Decompression
Sickness are even today still not always known. A diver may make a dive
well within their skill level, following all the rules and still get
the bends; moreover, they may have made the same or very similar dive
many times previously and everything went just as planned. It is a part
of diving that continues to evolve as more knowledge is obtained. Thanks to Larry Brasfield for finding our presenter.
Speaking of Larry and Bobette, it is
looking more and more like they may well move to the west coast in the
not too distant future. This move will necessitate the club finding a
replacement for Larry as our
Program Chairman. I am asking for a volunteer to assume this important
position. If you have any interest in becoming our Program Director,
please contact me. We will work with Larry and Bobette
to ensure a smooth transition when their move to the west coast becomes
final.
In other news, we continue
to get our equipment ready for the upcoming dive season. The 24 tanks
that had the Hydro tests previously completed have now all had the VIP
inspections completed as well and those tanks are ready to go. In
addition, the final 17 club tanks have also had the Hydro's completed
and are awaiting the VIP's on them. Many thanks to Paul and Fred for their help in getting the VIP's
completed; I also want to thank Tod
for his help in getting the final 17 tanks ready to be delivered
for their hydro's. It is my
understanding that the club has sent out the notice for club members
that have tanks that need to have the hydrostatic tests completed. Please
bring in your tanks if you need to have your tank inspection done.
Please bring them in by the time deadline in order to obtain the club
price. Outside fees are approximately double what the club charges for
the test. Finally, if you need
to have your VIP inspection completed, I think we will be getting a
notice out soon for those inspections.
I am looking forward to seeing you at
our March 11th club meeting.
Our March Board meeting will be held March 6th;
members are always welcome at that meeting as well. If you need to
reach me for any reason, again my email address is LRH666@aol.com and my cell phone number is 972-989-9809.

Training
New & Notes by Larry Dickinson
|
|
|
|
As we get
closer to the start of the dive season I need to start pulling together
the Training Staff list for 2008.
In order to work with students in the water you must be a Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, or Instructor in
"teaching status" for 2008 (paid your PADI/NAUI membership
dues and either be on the Texins
liability insurance list or provide your own liability insurance). We also have need for beach
assistants who just need to be willing to help with students and
general record keeping. I will
be contacting the "usual suspects" soon but if you are
interested in helping with training just let me know (training@texinsdiveclub.com).
For the PADI professionals the annual Member Forum
will be held on March 16 in Dallas. This is a good opportunity to hear
the latest news and rule changes from PADI and to interact directly
with the PADI home office folks.
They usually have some great door prizes so be sure to put this
on your calendars.
March will also bring the spring Training Staff
meeting which has been scheduled on Wednesday, 3/26. We will meet at the Dallas Texins Activities
Center at 6:30pm
for a short meeting and then adjourn to the pool to check out the BCDs and regulators. Bring your swim suits, towels, mask
and fins and help us inspect and check that the club gear is ready for
the first Open Water class in April.
We have several Discover Scuba sessions scheduled
in March for some local Girl Scout troops. Due to number of requests we have added
two additional Monday night sessions on 3/10 and 3/17. At this point we have at least six
students for these two nights and the normal Wednesday sessions (3/12
and 3/19). If you are interested
in helping with any of these sessions please contact ASAP so that I can
insure that we have adequate staff to support this worthwhile cause.
As always, if you have any questions, suggestions
or comments concerning our training program please let me know. We all need to work together to
continue growing our club so that we can continue our successful
journey in the underwater world!
Happy and Safe diving to all!
